The month of April is National Poetry Month! Chicago is historically known for its poetry, from Carl Sandburg to the annual Louder than a Bomb competition. Enjoy poetry readings, spoken word or browse local books stores for curated collections. Check out these Chicago events!

Stop by the Poetry Foundation, the headquarters for world-renowned poetry journal Poetry. Started in 1912 by Harriet Monroe, Poetry was an initiative to bring the art form away from the coasts and to the Midwest. Over a century later, the Poetry Foundation is now home to a 30,000 volume library, gallery space, public garden and event space. The foundation actively hosts public events and readings for the public, and their current exhibition features a photo gallery from poet Jun Fujita. Only a 7 minute walk from Grand Plaza or a 10 minute walk from AMLI River North.

Visit the Newberry Library, Chicago’s largest independent research library since 1887! Their collections include the history of the book, music, travel & exploration, and Chicago and Midwest history. The Newberry is also home to a large collection of literary magazines and journals, along with archives dedicated solely to Shakespeare. Stop by for some educational fun or attend an event, only a 4 minute walk from State & Chestnut!

Enjoy weekly poetry readings hosted by The Green Mill! Every Sunday night the jazz bar features the Uptown Poetry Slam, featuring Chicago’s own Beer Vendor Poet. Grab a drink and share your work, or just enjoy the jazz and spoken word! Only a 12 minute drive from Kent.

The Chicago Humanities Festival focuses on creativity, thoughtfulness, diversity and quality to provide a diversity of events such as readings, lectures and book signings.
