Livin’ La Vida Local: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Spread Awareness And Fight For A Cure This October

Although October is National Apple Month, National Dental Hygiene Month, National Pizza Month and a handful of others, one of its commemorative titles is decidedly more significant: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

At the end of September, CSN employees attended the Race for the Cure in Grant Park. It was great to see people of all ages participating, especially the survivors. It wasn’t a day of sadness; it was an uplifting and powerful event. Help that heightened hopefulness and support extend through October with these specials and events that benefit the fight for a cure:

Sullivan’s Steakhouse of Chicago (415 N. Dearborn St.) is offering their “Pink Menu” throughout October. The menu offers guests a three-course meal for $39.95, $5 of which will be donated to The National Breast Cancer Foundation. Feel even greater about eating classic American steaks with hand-shaken martinis while enjoying live music. Just a 10-minute ride on the 156 bus from 400 N LaSalle.

Lux Bar (18 E. Bellevue Pl.) is offering a reduced price on Goose Island Brewery’s 312 Urban Wheat Beer, with all proceeds benefiting the Lynn Sage Foundation. Drink for Brews for Breast Cancer less than a 20-minute ride on the 36 or 156 bus from Kingsbury Plaza.

The Spanish restaurant in the South Loop Tapas Valencia (1530 S. State St.) is donating some of the proceeds from their desserts to the organization Bright Pink, which helps educate young women most at risk for cancer. The pastel de pasion sounds worth a try: lemon sponge cake with passion fruit mousse and raspberry sauce. Try it just 2.5 miles southeast of Presidential Towers.

Get active on October 20 and participate in the 2012 Making Stride Against Breast Cancer at Montrose Harbor (Simonds Dr. and Montrose Dr.). The fundraising walk requires a $25 registration fee, or $30 on the day of the event. However, additional fundraising is strongly encouraged. The walk kicks off at 9am five miles north of Kingsbury Plaza.

Find more October-only specials and events here. But even after the specials expire come November, continue the fight for the cure year-round.
