As I struggle to walk down barely shoveled sidewalks and tackle mini snow mountains during Chicago winters, I can’t help but crave comfort food—that yummy, fattening deliciousness that breaks all the rules of my New Year’s diet. Like, mouthwatering hamburgers and creamy macaroni and cheese.

I can’t even mention burgers without thinking about the one I had at Au Cheval (800 W Randolph St.). I’m not even sure if I pronounce the French name of this Best Local restaurant correctly, but Au Cheval is where I had one of the best burgers in my life. This small West Loop dining spot has perfected everything you should expect from a burger.

When the waitress brought my burger, I thought she forgot to bring out the ketchup and mustard bottles. However, after I took my first bite, I discovered they weren’t necessary. I ordered a single burger with cheese, but the single burger actually has two patties. Its quality ground meat is seasoned well, juicy, and on a soft, toasted bun. It’s the typical ingredients you would expect, but how it all comes together is so spot-on. The pickles are even homemade.
